The Road to France: Can David James recreate the perfect Michael Owen debut?

David James The Road to France

With this week’s team announcements from both the English and Welsh FA’s, it feels like Euro 2016 is finally within touching distance. And to get you even more in the mood for the tournament, we thought we would share some of the #RoadToFrance content with you that has been put together by Continental Tyres.

Former England No.1 David James (who has an impressive 53 England caps to his name between 1997 and 2010) heads to Saint-Étienne to share his prediction on the England team, and try his hand at recreating Michael Owen’s screamer against Argentina from the ‘98 World Cup…

James should be a lot more at home between the posts than in trying to hit the target, but as you can see he was more than happy to take on this particular challenge at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, to take up the one of the most historic moments in English football!

On the very ground where Michael Owen made his debut, James receives the incoming pass from a makeshift “David Beckham” before weaving his way towards the target with a few twists and turns along the way. A goalkeeper surely out of his depth – he drives the ball to the back of the net. Cue the wild celebrations. (And if you are old enough I am sure you will remember – it was THIS game that also had THAT dramatic sending off of Beck’s, and the full time score of 2-2 that lead to the inevitable penalty failure!)

The Road to France features 9 instalments with each one covering one of the 9 host venues.
