The Importance of a Balanced Breakfast

The Everyday ManSometimes the thought of an extra 15 minutes in bed in the morning might seem much more appealing than 15 minutes spent preparing/eating breakfast.  When it comes to the your heath though, the breakfast will definitely do you much more good than 15 minutes on snooze mode.

When you wake up from a nights sleep your body is hungry, it’s been fasting all night long!  In fact the word breakfast basically means ‘break the fast’ (every day’s a school day).  Having a nutritious breakfast at the start of your day will not only give you that much-needed morning shot of energy, it will provide you with some of the minerals, fibre and vitamins that your body needs to function.

We all know that people who eat breakfast are less likely to snack as they go about their day too.  When you think about it, it makes perfect sense.  You will be less hungry and should be able to focus better on whatever you’re doing without the rumble of your stomach as a distraction in the background.  People often think that they should eat less (and maybe skip breakfast) if they are dieting but that is not strictly true. Of course eating consuming fewer calories is often key to a diet regime but eating small and often is actually the best way for your body to process food.  It’s far easier for your body to handle small, light meals 4 or 5 times a day than 2 big heavy portions with nothing else in between.

If you want to build or maintain muscle then breakfast is probably the make or break moment in your day.  Building muscle needs a lot of protein each day, but the body can only process a certain amount of the stuff at any one time so you need to carefully spread out your intake.  Starting things off with a protein rich breakfast is a great kick off and sets you on a good foot for the rest of the day.

So, I’ve convinced you to sort out your breakfast game. What should you be eating exactly?  Well, that all depends on you.  How much time you want to spend prepping it and what type of food you like but the good thing is you have plenty of options…

A big ol’ bowl of cereal

No one can say that they don’t have time for a bowl of cereal in the morning.  Be careful with which one you choose as many of them have a whole shedload of sugars.  I like muesli myself or a bowl of porridge with some fruit and honey in the winter.

Eggs, eggs, eggs!

The original superfood.  Eggs are packed with protein, versatile and the kings of the breakfast table.  It takes only a couple of minutes to throw together an omelette or some scrambled eggs.  If you are feeling a little more adventurous then try your hand at some very tasty breakfast egg muffins.

A nutritious Herbalife shake

It takes only a few seconds to whip up a Herbalife F1 shake so they are the perfect way to grab a balanced breakfast on the go.  Formula 1 includes important vitamins and minerals that will help you to achieve your RDA as well as being rich in soy protein which helps build lean muscle mass alongside a training regime.  It’s available in a range of tasty flavours too (strawberry is my favourite) so there is one everyone will like.

Traditional English…with a twist

Who doesn’t love a good old fry-up!?  The downside to them is that they are not the best for your health but there is plenty of ways to opt for a healthier version.  Take some turkey bacon and lean turkey sausages, stick them under the grill and plate up with some, scrambled egg, reduced sugar beans and tomato.  Hey presto!
