Review: The Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Razor

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5

Just because I have a bit of beard on my cheeks does not mean that I don’t know a thing or 2 about shaving. I still have to shave around the edges and my neckline almost daily.

Trying to select a razor to use from the sea of razors that are on the market nowadays can be a little daunting, especially as lots of them claim to be the best. Recently I have been using the new Hydro 5 razor from Wilkinson Sword as part of my daily grooming routine and I’ve been pleased with the results.

Wilkinson Sword are of course already well-known for quality and for their innovative shaving products which offer value for money but I reckon the new Hydro 5 razor could be their best release yet.

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5

The Hydro 5 design

I was immediately drawn to the clean and masculine blue and white colour of the handle that also features a new ergonomic handle. This has been designed to fit perfectly in your hand and give a full range of motion. When you first pick up the new Hydro 5 razor you notice that it has a nice weight to it, which is something that I like, I associate it with quality.

I really like that it feels comfortable to use but is also easy to stay in control of the shave due to the grip handle – something that is key to me as I shape my cheeks and edges.

The Shave

The true test of quality for me is never on the first use of a new razor blade but more so on the third or fourth. I really like the hydrating reservoirs on the Hydro 5, they have been designed to last up to twice as long as others on the market and deliver up to 40% less friction. My skin can get irritated pretty easily but I never got any with this razor, especially on my neck, which is normally the area, I get it the worst.

For the difficult to reach contours of the face you can activate the ‘flip trimmer’ with a quick flick of your thumb. This pushes the hydrating gel pools to the back and enables you to benefit from unparalleled control and precision, a really good idea!

The guard bars and reduced blade span have been redesigned on this model too to improve comfort, safety and prevent your skin pinching. This all helps to avoid those annoying little nicks.

My Verdict

Overall I really like the Hydro 5 and will definitely continue to use it. It got the job done without leaving me feeling irritated or missing any noticeable hairs, which are the 2 things, that annoy me most.
