The Heverlee micro-festival at New Waverley in Edinburgh

What better way to celebrate the Belgian national day than with a pint of one of their finest exports, Heverlee.  And I can’t think of a better setting to enjoy said pint this weekend – unless you happen to be in Brussels – than the Heverlee micro-festival at New Waverley in Edinburgh.

New Waverley is a cool new district of Edinburgh that seems to have just appeared out of nowhere.  Even though it’s located directly behind the main train station it maintains a bit of a secret vibe to it that rewards those that want to venture off the beaten track with a prize of little independent shops, restaurants and bars.  This weekend though, New Waverley will really come alive thanks to the arrival of the Heverlee micro-festival, that will see the best of Belgian and Scottish culture merge.

At the centre of the festival is the bar, where visitors will have the chance to sample the classic Heverlee pils as well as their new Blonde beer (my personal favourite) and IPA brew too.  I reckon the new brews will sell out quickly though so it’s best to get down early if you fancy giving them a try.  When that hunger strikes, The Pitt will be on hand to serve up some really tasty beer stew, steak, waffles and of course the Belgian tradition that is moules frites (mussels with fries).

Even if beer is not your bag then don’t worry as this is just a cool place to hang out and there’s a whole load of other stuff going on too right through the weekend.  You can watch as the whole area is transformed by the resident street artists, watch one of the vintage Belgian silent movies in the pop-up cinema or just enjoy the music.  Edinburgh’s own Firecracker Recordings have lined up a great mix of DJs to provide the soundtrack, there will be sets from the likes of Charlie Bones and Eclair Fifi from Lucky Me.

It’s all kicks off this afternoon and runs until Sunday 23rd at 11pm.  All the scoop, including the full line-up for the weekend is over on the Heverlee Facebook page.
