Revealed: The Top 5 Counties in England

A recent poll has been released to reveal the best counties in England. Discover the top five and why they have been given the honour.

5. Somerset

In fifth place, we have Somerset, a county with quintessential English towns and rolling green countryside crowned by an ancient spa town. Somerset is known for its cheese, ciders and the warm West Country burr and attitude of the local people.

The new homes in attractive towns like Taunton and Glastonbury are ideal for first-time buyers, especially young families looking for somewhere secure or retirees seeking somewhere quiet. The City of Bath has flats and elegant Georgian heritage properties at various prices.

4. Cornwall

Next up we have Cornwall at the south-westerly tip of the country. This coastal county has a proud fishing heritage, a fiercely independent culture and some of the best surfing in the world.

If you’re planning a UK beach holiday for next summer, Cornwall is one of the safest options in terms of weather. Visit during August and you could catch some of your favourite bands and watch skating and surfing competitions at the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay. While living in Cornwall can feel chaotic in high season, it is a peaceful refuge for the rest of the year.

3. North Yorkshire

Yorkshire is so large that it’s officially split into four separate counties, and it seems that the north is the most popular region with residents and tourists alike. With the idyllic North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales on the doorstep, the historic city of York close by and endless market towns to explore, this county offers something for everyone.

Frequently included in the UK’s best places to live, the spa town of Harrogate is a great base for exploring North Yorkshire. York is just half an hour away on the train, as are protected heritage sites such as Fountains Abbey and Ripon Cathedral by car. The picturesque national parks with famous locations such as Malham Tarn are easily accessible too.

2. Cumbria

More enchanting landscapes await in Cumbria which is undoubtedly the most beautiful English county. Dominated by the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its striking natural scenery, everywhere you go there are lush hills, high mountains and vast glacial lakes glittering in valleys.

Many tourists visit in the autumn when the trees turn bronze and gold and red squirrels are more easily spotted in the canopies, or during summer for water sports on the many lakes.

1. Devon

Topping the list for this year is Devon, the county with a little bit of everything. Boasting Britain’s best natural wonders including two national parks, nine RSPB reserves and the longest coastline in the UK, time outdoors here is paradisical whether you’re eight or 80, and there are many indoor attractions for rainy days too.

A flurry of Michelin-star restaurants sits alongside cafés serving the humble but delicious local cuisine, giving Devon one of the best food scenes in the country. Whether you’re coming for a few days or to stay, these are meals that you’ll remember.
