Tried & Tested: Sennheiser CX 400BT Earbuds Review

Sennheiser has long been one of my favourite audio brands. In fact, the first pair of proper headphones that I ever bought was a pair of over-ear Momentums and I loved them. They were my go-to for a couple of years until I sadly left them in a hotel room in New York City and they were never found. Sad face.

In general, I do prefer over-ear headphones but when working out or simply being on the move around town, a wireless bud is a much better option so I was delighted to be given the chance to try the Sennheiser CX 400BT earbuds recently.

At first glance, there’s no doubt that these are a quality and well-made product. I tested a white pair and I really liked the matt colour finish on both the buds and the charging/carry dock.

The Sennheiser CX 400BT earbuds themselves are a little chunkier looking than say an apple AirPod but they are lightweight and comfortable to wear once in the ear. the huge plus point about them being slightly boxier at the end is that there’s no need for a long stem to protrude from your ear.

I found the sound quality and bass to be of a good standard and certainly what I’d expect from a brand like Sennheiser. The battery life too worked for me with an advertised life of up to 20 hours, although I never needed to use them for that long.

The big downside for me though is that they are not water or sweatproof. At their current selling price of £99 that may not be expected but if you are buying them to use during intense cardio sessions then these may not be ideal, For general lighter workouts or weights sessions they would serve you well though.

The setup was straightforward and quick. You can either pair them directly with your phone and use them as the factory intended or you can download the associated app to have greater control over the features if you wish. The buds themselves have touch control points on the sides. These like with any touch controls take a little getting used to but once you get the hang of what does what (it took me a couple of days), operating them becomes second nature.

All in all, I’d say that the Sennheiser CX 400BT earbuds are a pretty decent mid-market earbud that will deliver good battery life, good quality sound, great design and comfort and all for the price of £99. I’d say that these are a pretty good bet.
