Disney have today confirmed that they have purchased the Star Wars franchise for $4billion, 35 years after Lucasfilms released the original, Star Wars episode IV: A new hope.
Star Wars cemented its place in cinematic history at the end of the 70’s and has since spawned two sequels and three prequels along with a variety of comic books, TV series and video games.
Disney are aiming to produce a further three movies, the first of which has been rumoured for release in 2015. The franchise has always been a hit at the box office and executives are now hoping to continue the success for a new generation of film fanatics to enjoy. George Lucas, founder of Lucasfilm, is said to be pleased with the deal.
