As the most popular sport in the world, football is enjoyed by millions of people. However, not all fans share the same amount of knowledge when it comes to the ins and outs of football, especially its history. To bring everyone up to speed, this article aims to share a series of interesting facts about football in hopes of helping supporters gain a better understanding of one of the most beloved sports ever.
The first interesting fact about football is that it indeed has very mysterious origins. From what is best understood, the earliest versions of the game can be traced back approximately 3,000 years. However, the actual circumstances of the creation of football remain unknown for certain.
What we know is that a long time ago, there was a similar game to football called Tsu Chu, which was played by the Chinese military during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD). Using a leather ball stuffed full of feathers and hair, players tried to kick the ball into a small net strung between two bamboo canes.
While American football reigns supreme in the United States, ice hockey remains dominant in Canada. In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, cricket is the most beloved sport. And, for the rest of the world, football is the most popular spectator sport. The sport has about 3.5 billion fans worldwide, with 250 million players across 200 countries.
Football isn’t just a spectator sport, though. For many fans who also wager on matches, their enjoyment of football transcends merely watching matches unfold. Punters stay up to date with the latest developments in football from injury and transfer news to the changing Premier League odds winner and their favourite club’s standings.
So, what makes football so beloved by basically the entire planet?
Research has shown that the near-universal love for football comes from the uniquely human proclivity for social connection and tribalism.
The vast majority of people enjoy, and ever need, being part of a group. Even the passive activity of watching their favourite team play, or the more immersive experience of playing on an organised team, provides the majority of people with a sense of belonging and community, which are the main reasons why we all love the game of football.
Even while many individuals are now beginning to realise that gender-related preferences are not entirely applicable to sports and other professions in life, many still believe that football is primarily a masculine sport. In any case, in England, women began playing football around the same time as men.
With the rise of women’s sports like the incredible footballers who play in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the sport is reaching more people than ever. For many people, football is the first sport they play. Indeed, the ‘beautiful game’ transcends gender prejudices and unites people like nothing else.
From football’s ancient origins in China where the ‘kickballs’ were made from sewn clothing or leather filled with rubble, to Europe during the Middle Ages, where footballs were made from inflated pig bladders, the sport and its equipment has continuously evolved over the years.
Today, most of the balls used in football are made from layers of synthetic leather. What was once pig bladders has been replaced with butyl, thank goodness.
