It’s the season to be merry, and what better way to spread festive cheer than with a delicious, independently brewed beer?

“Christmas is a time for indulgence,” says Neel Singh, Managing Director at Dorking Brewery. “And that includes enjoying a quality beer or two. But, when so many styles and flavours are out there, it can be tricky to know where to start when it comes to the right beer for Christmas.”

That’s why we sat down with the experts at Dorking Brewery, an independent brewery, to get the inside scoop on the perfect brews to accompany your Christmas celebrations.

Pairing Perfection: Beer Meets Christmas Dinner

It’s no secret that the Christmas dinner is the star of the show. But for beer lovers, which enhances the flavours of the meal that only comes around once a year most?

“For the main event,” Neel advises, “we recommend a classic IPA. The bold and punchy flavours provide a wonderful addition to the richness of the turkey without overpowering the palate. Subtle fruity esters often found in this style also complement the Christmas dinner extras such as the sweetness of cranberry sauce.”

But what about the other elements on your plate? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Roast Potatoes: A crisp, refreshing pilsner beautifully cuts through roast potatoes’ delicious fattiness. The clean, dry finish and subtle herbal hop character cleanse the palate between bites, allowing you to fully appreciate those golden spuds.
  • Brussels Sprouts: The bitterness of the hops in an IPA complements the strong and earthy flavour of Brussels sprouts. Look for an IPA with citrusy or piney hop aromas, as these can complement the rustic notes of the sprouts. A slightly sweeter IPA, like a West Coast style, can also work well, especially with caramelised sprouts.
  • Christmas Pudding: To complement a rich Christmas pudding, you need a beer that can stand up to its complex flavours. Stouts are an excellent choice thanks to their chocolate and coffee notes. Their creamy texture and full body provide a luxurious counterpoint to the pudding’s dense richness.

Festive Favourites for Fireside Gatherings

Christmas isn’t just about the big day itself. It’s about cosy nights by the fire and catching up with loved ones. Dorking Brewery has some excellent suggestions for those special moments.

If you’re looking for a beer you can enjoy throughout the festive period, Neel recommends their Surrey XPA. “It’s an extra pale ale with light and zesty notes that make it incredibly sessionable. Coming in at 3.4% ABV, it’s not a heavy beer, meaning several can be enjoyed!”

More Options for Designated Drivers

For those taking on the role of a designated driver or simply prefer to avoid alcohol, low alcohol or alcohol-free beers are more common than ever, and mean people can responsibly enjoy beer with ease.

“For those seeking a delicious low alcohol option,” Neel explains, “the brewing world has seen incredible advancements in recent years. Low alcohol beer offers exceptional flavour and complexity, and we’re particularly proud of our contribution: Temple Pale. It’s a carefully crafted brew that delivers all the refreshing hop character and satisfying bitterness of a traditional pale ale, without the alcohol content.”

Supporting Local This Christmas

Supporting independent breweries this Christmas goes an incredibly long way. Whether it’s Dorking Brewery or your local, supporting independent businesses passionate about their craft is what Christmas is all about.

“At Dorking Brewery,” Neel reflects, “we believe that being a part of our community is just as crucial as the quality of the beers we craft. The two are inextricably linked; one cannot exist without the other. When you choose Dorking Brewery, you’re not just enjoying a fantastic beer,  but you’re supporting a local business deeply invested in our community. Knowing that our beers are shared amongst loved ones during this special time of year brings us immense pride.”

So, raise a glass (or bottle) of beer this Christmas, enjoy the festive season, and always drink responsibly.
