Apex City of Glasgow Hotel Review

Wherever I travel too I find myself selling the city of Glasgow as a destination.  Of course hailing from the area I am maybe a little bit biased but that aside I really think a visit should be on everyone’s agenda.  I spend a lot of time in London and regularly find myself met with intrigue when I explain to people that I live north of the border.  You can almost hear them muttering to themselves saying ‘why?’ to themselves in their heads.  Why not I say?  And I launch into my sales pitch detailing why everyone must visit…

Then comes the question of where should they stay when they visit.  Well that I’m afraid is a bit of a stumbling block as one little thing the city does lack is well-located, quirky, modern hotels that won’t break the bank.  I was pleased to hear last year that Apex Hotels were to take over the property on Bath Street (a lively locale lined with bars, restaurants, local businesses which links the city centre with the west end).  Just before Christmas, I headed along to check out what Apex had done with the place.

In short, they have changed just about everything. Most notably the premises have been given a much more pleasing on the eye and fresher feeling colour scheme.  The small reception area was always manned with friendly staff who seemed to show a genuine interest in my purpose for visiting the city and were keen to offer some recommendations (I never let slip that I was actually a local).  I had checked into a city view room on just below the Duplex suite which offered pretty stunning views across the Glasgow rooftops, which looked especially pretty at sunset.

The room’s themselves are pretty compact but tick off the 3 things I most look for in any hotel: Comfy BIG bed, decent TV and Powerful (and hot) shower. There’s no rip off mini-bar, instead, the hotel provides a small selection of snacks including some Scottish biscuits which I thought was a nice touch.  But back to the bed.  It was amazing!  I have stayed in 5 star properties where the sleep has not been anywhere near as good.  The room just emitted a nice chilled vibe. It felt really homely but had all of the modern touches (and plenty of plugs to charge your gadgets).

I never used the bar or restaurant within the Apex but I did have breakfast delivered the following morning which in all honesty wasn’t the best.  I think it was the girl who brought it up to the rooms the first day (I did visit just after it opened) and she had managed to muddle a few things up but it wasn’t too much of a big deal as what I did get was tasty and warm.  Maybe the subliminal message was that I shouldn’t be as lazy and should have instead just headed downstairs to fetch a bite…!

If you fancy dining out I would recommend the Italian restaurant Sarti, which is located on the same street and has been Glasgow fixture popular with locals and visitors for many years.  They actually have a few outlets but I think the one on Bath Street (aside from the hotel) is the nicest.
