Stevie Wonder Live at BST Hyde Park with Playstation Music

Last Sunday I went along to the BST festival in London’s Hyde Park to watch Stevie Wonder, one of the legends of the music industry perform a rare live concert.  As the closing leg of the annual BST festival Stevie performed his most accomplished album ‘Songs In The Key of Life’ on the Great Oak stage in front of the capacity crowd.

I went along to the event with Playstation music who were hosting one of the other stages at the event and had a pretty impressive selection of up and coming artists on their bill including Allen Stone and JP Cooper. Playstation had also set up their new VR system and I managed to try it out – I went on a journey below the sea and encountered a few creatures along the way, it was a lot of fun.

For me though this day was all about the music and in particular, Stevie Wonder.  By late afternoon the sun was shining and the audience had already been treated to the likes of Pharrell Williams and Corinne Bailey Rae but by 6.15 (yes his set started that early) on came Stevie Wonder and his band.  Things got off to a start on a rather subdued note as he paid tribute to the recent atrocities across the world and encouraged everyone to stop the hate and killing as he appeared ons stage before getting things underway.

Unlike most of other gigs that I have been to of late this show was purely about the music. No fireworks, crazy dancers or other gimmicks were needed as Mr Wonder became making his way through the ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ album in order.  For the more casual fans this was maybe a bit lost on them but those who stuck it out for the 4 hour of music that would lie ahead were rewarded at the end with a high tempo melody of hits!

‘Shall we do it all again next year’, said Stevie as he wrapped things up. I’ll be there if he will!
