Ardbeg, the world’s smokiest and peatiest Islay malt, has just levelled up its offering by opening a boutique hotel on the island and it is a whisky lover’s dream.
Ardbeg House, set in the heart of Port Ellen and only a stone’s throw from the distillery itself, is where visitors can now eat, sleep and, of course, drink Ardbeg. The property, formerly the Islay Hotel, has been completely reimagined with the help of Russell Sage Studio and more than 20 Scottish artisans. Expect copper wall art made from a retired still, a chandelier built from a boat, and playful buttons labelled Press for Smoke that reveal hidden drams.
There are just 12 bedrooms and suites, each themed around a different slice of Islay life from smugglers’ hideouts to mythical sea creatures. Downstairs, the boldly styled Signature Restaurant is anchored by a fire table top table for communal dining, with menus that champion local produce and Ardbeg inspired twists. On Friday nights, the Shortie’s Table brings guests together over a sociable set menu with whisky pairings, named after Ardbeg’s much loved mascot dog.
The revived Islay Bar is back too, with exclusive drams only available on site, including Ardbeg Homecoming, Ardbeg House Reserve and the mysterious Badger Juice, poured at the daily 18:15 whisky ritual. Outside, the Untamed Courtyard serves up barbecue from a custom smoker, echoing Ardbeg’s signature peaty punch.
Guests also get private daily tours of the distillery and the chance to explore Islay’s wild landscapes, sweeping beaches and rich folklore. It is an experience designed to turn even casual whisky drinkers into lifelong Ardbeg fans.
