How to elevate your look for the party season

The Everyday MAn

Well, December is finally here and if your social calendar looks anything like mines then the next few weeks are going to be filled with events, parties and the all-important festivities that fall around Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.   This barrage of social occasions calls for some serious thinking about your look.

Menswear in general may have got a lot more casual over the past few years with dressing down pretty well accepted most of the time, but there are different rules at Christmas. This is the one time of the year (aside from the odd wedding or summer function) where you are expected to really pull it out of the bag.

The Everyday ManSprucing up your wardrobe with some new partywear additions will help to get you ready for the season but even more crucial than that is kicking some life into your grooming regime. For starters, your hair should be neat and well styled. It’s a good idea to plan ahead and make an appointment with your barber now if you know you have something big coming up later in the month. Don’t leave it to chance and be let down at the last minute!

Your facial hair is of course just as important as that on your head.   It might sound a little bit old fashioned but I’m very much an advocate of maintaining a well-groomed look. I may wear stubble pretty much all year round but I keep it tidy and maintain it every day by shaving around the edges with a razor and keeping the length short with my trimmer.

Some of you will of course, prefer the clean look. If you are going to get rid of all your stubble it’s very important to use a quality razor, as the last thing you want to do is leave yourself with nicks and cuts. That wouldn’t be a good party look at all.   I’d suggest picking up a Dorco Classic razor as not only does it look the part but also its 7 precision-aligned blades will make light work of getting rid of your growth.

The Everyday ManOnce, you have your grooming game sorted, it’s time to find something to actually wear. My rule of thumb at this time of year is to always take your clothing style up at least one notch. If you are normally someone who wears trainers all of the time, opt for shoes, if you wear suits a lot of the time then opt for a luxurious fabric like a velvet. If you really want to be the centre of attention then there are plenty of metallic and even sequined blazers kicking around the high street too. My go to festive look is a fitted velvet blazer, white shirt and oversized bow tie. It just screams out party to me.  As you can see this year I choose to go pretty bold and have snapped up an eye-catching blue velvet Duchamp blazer as my statement piece.  I love it.

And when you finally arrive at that party what should be your drink of choice? Well who am I to tell you what to order but in my opinion there’s nothing like a well-made Negroni at this time of the year to perfectly compliment your elevated style.
