Sports field or fashion runway?

American sports will never come close in terms of popularity here in the UK as say football.  One area that American sports do however outshine our British favourites is their impact on the fashion world.  Football or Rugby tops (aside from maybe a nice vintage strip) are worn to the match or the gym but otherwise, look out-of-place as part of an outfit.

Head over stateside and it is an entirely different story.  American sportswear has a distinctively retro essence in its designs which sits better in terms of casual fashion.  These key sportswear trends can easily make the transition from the sports field to fashion stores.  This autumn we see a continuation of the popular sports luxe theme in menswear.   A drop in temperatures however sees a shift in urban clothing away from basketball top and t-shirts to baseball jerseys, hoodies and beanies.

Urban clothing is no longer just the uniform of street gangs.  Labels that at one time would have a filled the rails in sports shops only are now found among the collections at leading designer boutiques.  Varsity jackets although not entirely urban at heart are also one of the seasons must-have items, which again shows another strong influence world of sport.

I have had a mooch around the latest AW13 collections available online and selected some of my urban fashion picks for the coming months…

The Majestic Chicago Cubs white baseball top is one of my absolute favourites from the Capology range.  They have a massive selection of urban clothing including the LA Raiders joggers and this brilliant red New Era cap.  All three now added to my wish list! 😉

Sik Silk has been one of the big success stories this year, Fairley printed tops were top of every lad’s holiday shopping list this summer.  The new season brings a new range of Sik Silk product including the Black top shown above from Footasylum.

Even the high street stores have jumped on the bandwagon, with the likes of Topman and Bank featuring baseball jackets (above) and tops in their latest ranges.
