Tried & Tested: Are the Tanita RD-953 Smart Scales Worth It?

There’s been a bit more intent behind my routine lately. Nothing extreme, just tightening things up. Training properly, being more aware of what I’m eating, and actually tracking whether it’s making a difference. The Tanita RD-953 smart scales have slotted into that without feeling like another thing to manage, which is probably why I’ve stuck with them.

I wasn’t really looking for anything overly technical, just something that would give me a clearer picture of progress beyond weight alone. If anything, I didn’t think I’d care that much about things like muscle mass, but it’s ended up being one of the more useful parts of it.

The setup was genuinely effortless. I connected the scales to my phone via Bluetooth in one click and that was it. No messing around, no second attempts, no digging through instructions. It syncs quickly, the app is straightforward, and everything just works in the background without you having to think about it.

Design-wise, they’re exactly what you’d want from something you’re leaving out every day. Clean, minimal, and premium without being overdesigned. It doesn’t scream “fitness gadget”, which I actually prefer. It just blends into your space and does its job.

What makes the Tanita RD-953 stand out is the level of body composition data it gives you. Weight on its own doesn’t tell you much, especially if you’re training regularly. I had a week recently where I’d trained well at the gym, eaten properly, and fully expected to see the number drop a bit. It didn’t. Normally that would be a bit frustrating, but muscle mass had ticked up and body fat had come down slightly, which told a completely different story. That’s the kind of detail you just don’t get from standard scales.

It also helps take some of the guesswork out of things. Instead of wondering whether your routine is working, you can actually see trends over time. Even small shifts feel more meaningful when you’ve got that context, and it makes it easier to stay consistent without constantly second-guessing things.

In terms of day-to-day use, it’s as simple as it should be. Step on, it syncs instantly, and the data’s there in the app. No friction. Because of that, I’ve been more consistent with checking in, which naturally keeps things a bit more dialled without overthinking it. It becomes part of your routine rather than something you have to remember to do.

If you’re focusing on improving body composition rather than just chasing a lower number on the scale, this makes a noticeable difference. It gives you a more balanced view of progress, especially during phases where things aren’t moving in a straight line.

The Tanita RD-953 isn’t about overloading you with data for the sake of it. It gives you exactly what you need, presents it clearly, and fits into your routine without adding friction. If you’re looking for smart scales that actually help you stay on track, particularly over summer when routines tend to shift a bit, it’s a solid upgrade.

The Tanita RD-953 smart scales are available now, with an RRP of £179.99.
